You should only use the latest version of firmware for your unit unless it is causing problems, or removes a feature you need. It's sometimes necessary to install a specific firmware version in order to apply a region-unlocking hack to a player or drive.
Interruption of a firmware update will "brick" your device. Ensure that your player or computer is connected to an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) before starting a firmware update, and never disconnect power until the update is complete.
Never attempt to use the firmware for a different player or drive unless a reliable source reports that it is safe to do so. This applies to using OEM firmware in a rebadged player or drive, or attempting to "cross-flash" a drive to turn one player or drive into another.
Every firmware update carries the risk of rendering your device inoperable. Perform firmware upgrades at your own risk!

It appears that RCA never provided downloadable firmware ISOs for the HDV5000. RCA's website only provided instructions for how to download firmware updates through the player, which no longer works. The HDV5000 can use firmware for the Toshiba HD-XA1, but will then display Toshiba branding instead of RCA branding.

LG
The first two generations of LG Blu-ray drives had read support for HD DVD discs. The naming convention is as follows:
G[BG][CW]-H[12]0[LN]
[BG]G = "Multi-blue" drive with support for Blu-ray and HD DVD; B = "Blu-ray only" [CW]C = CD/DVD writer, Blu-ray/HD DVD reader; W = CD/DVD/Blu-ray writer, HD DVD reader [12]1 = 1st generation; 2 = 2nd generation [LN]L = LightScribe support; N = no LightScribe support
Drives with a "B" as the second letter are multi-blue drives with HD DVD support removed from the firmware. Such drives can be flashed with the firmware for the drive that has the same model number, but with a "G" as the second letter. This must the only difference in the model numbers. You can cross-flash to restore HD DVD support; don't try to turn a first-generation drive into a second-generation drive, or add LightScribe support to a drive without LightScribe support.
GGW-H20L / GBW-H20L
The GBW-H20L is a GGW-H20L with HD DVD support removed from the firmware. It can be cross-flashed to turn it back into a GGW-H20L.
Now compatible with Windows Vista. The following improvements have been made for Windows Vista.
Fixed the phenomenon where the operation was interrupted and writing was not possible when writing to DVD+-R DL media using the OS standard function.
Fixed the phenomenon where the writing speed to DVD media may not be able to write at the maximum speed specified.
Fixed the phenomenon where the media may be recognized as a blank disc when re-recognizing it after writing a file of approximately 130MB or less to DVD-R/RW media.
Fixed the phenomenon where writing to DVD+RW media may not be performed normally.
Fixed the phenomenon where the playback of HD DVD Twin Format content may stop in Windows XP and Windows Vista.
